Tony Sharp - President

I've been in traffic signals for South Gloucester County Council since 1999 but I retain a keen interest in safety audit, road safety and motorcycling. I started in highway engineering with Avon County Council.
I was elected to IHIE Council in 1998 and currently chair Membership & Qualifications Committee and sit on PACTS for IHIE. I led the Editorial Group for the IHIE Guidelines for Motorcycling and, at the Minister's request, chair the traffic group of the National Motorcycle Council.
I am married to Janice, a process engineer, and live in Yate enjoying biking, cycling and hill walking.
Steve Spender - Senior Vice President

An Incorporated Engineer with nearly 20 years civil engineering experience in Highway Maintenance & Design, more recently in Network and Asset Management. I am currently employed as a Highway Manager at Hampshire County Council where I have been in my present role since 2005, prior to which I was Head of Engineering Services at Winchester City Council. Within my current role I am responsible for the Authority's Highway Land Searches & Status team as well as the Asset Management Team who are responsible for the implementation of asset management within the County Council's Environment Department.
I became involved in highway maintenance and construction in the late 1980's, first with Bournemouth Borough Council for nearly twelve years before joining Colas for two years as an Area Manager within the Micro Asphalt Division.
I passed my professional review in 1998 and joined IHIE Council in 2004. I sit on the Management, Policy & Development committee and am Chairman of the Membership & Qualifications Committee. I am a mentor and reviewer for professional reviews and I am also a moderator with JBM representing IHIE on accreditation visits to Universities.
I live in Bournemouth and am supported in all that I do by my wife Anne.
Richard Hayes - Junior Vice President

I am Head of Construction and Engineering in the Highways and Transportation division of the Community and Environmental Services Department in the Network Management branch of the Environmental Department of Northumberland County Council- no lack of hierarchy there then! My current principal responsibility is the delivery of the Council's capital programme currently valued around £19 m per annum.
I represent the IHIE on the Construction Industry Council's Health and Safety Committee and the CSS Safety, Standards and Training Group. As Chair of the North East Highways Training Centre, I also contribute to the Institute's work on Highway Inspector and Maintenance training.
Peter Dipper

I served on the Engineering Council (UK) governing board from 2002 to 2008, including IHIE.
Previously from 1996 to 2001, I served on the Engineering Council Senate and was Vice Chairman of the Board for Engineering Registration.
I chaired the UK SPEC Technician standards group.
After many years in local government services as a highway engineer, training officer in Eastern counties, and finally as Training Centre Manager for Cornwall, Devon and Plymouth, I am now a self-employed consultant trainer.
I am a member of the Highways & Construction Training Association, a national network of centres providing training and assessment services.
My involvement with IHIE culminated in my serving as Institute President in 1994 to 1996. I returned to Council afterwards, serving until 2006.
I think I have done most roles at the Institute - disciplinary processes, reviewer, IEng seminar trainer, vetting individual qualifications, symposium organiser, accrediting college courses, NVQ development and policy, CPD initiatives.

Susan Broadaway- Immediate Past President

Susan is the immediate Past President of IHIE.
Previously I was with Denbighshire County Council, a Unitary Authority established in 1996, as Section Manager in the Development Services Section of the Highways and Transportation department.
Before reorganisation I was 13 years with the former Clwyd County Council, where I gained my Professional qualification as an Incorporated Engineer and Fellow of the Institute in 1992. I am a member of the Institution of Highways and Transportation and Chaired the North Wales branch.
My interests are very wide and varied. I enjoy a challenge and while working under pressure can still smile.
