It also shows why some surfacing materials have such short lives when other SMA's are already 14 years old and will easily last for 20 years. It will stress the importance of ensuring that suitable surfacing options are considered for sites, that unsuitable options are discarded and that best laying practices are employed. Guidance will be given on selecting suitable materials. It will also look at the following areas:

  • BBA/HAPAS proprietary materials and non-HAPAS materials
  • Tack coats and Bond coats, why they are so vital
  • Joints in SMAs and thin surfacings
  • Other surface course materials
  • EME2 and HD26/06
  • Early life skidding
  • Paving and compaction, what to particularly watch for
  • Carriageway ironwork, patching SMAs and thin surfacings.
