Road Safety Awards

2008 Prince Michael Awards went to

  • Thames Valley safer roads partnership for a new analysis tool 'Headline Data' combining existing crash data (STATS 19) with a new geodemographic database.
  • Staffordshire County's Road Safety unit and GreenRoad Technologies for a hi-tech black box which is fitted to young drivers' cars to monitor how they drive. By looking at their driving patterns with their families and road safety trainers, young drivers can learn how to improve their skills. The pilots showed a massive improvement in participants behaviours and Admiral reduced their incurance by 25%.
  • Tele-Traffic's Commander System developed to address the issue of speeding motorcyclist by a leading safety camera firm.

DfT has commisioned research from

  • Faber Maunsell to evaluate road safety policies and procedures in England
  • TRL on road-user safety issues in relation to cycling. Completion September 2010.
  • Leeds on low cost ways to control speed. The report 20 intervention

Tales of the Road

www.direct.gov.uk/talesoftheroad has interactive games for children and education material for teachers. Part of a new £1.5m THINK! campaign.

Newcastle Road Safety courses 2009

Three two day courses on policy, AIP and RSa followed by an assessed report based on a practical exercise equates to 10 CPD days. Starts 2/3 February 2009.
