Becoming an incorporated engineer
Incorporated engineers are mainstream operations managers at the forefront of developing engineering technology.
Registration as an IEng with the Engineering Council is the professional accolade to aim for and IHIE smooths your path.
The route now requires ONE combined Review Report and a CD.
General requirements for IEng
- An academic qualification in engineering normally to degree level. Check out your qualifications.
- A period of Initial Professional Development (IPD) completing your training and gaining experience in your chosen field. Plan what experience you need to meet the Engineering Council's requirements.
- A presentation and interview based on a 3000 word Review Report, demonstrating technical and professional competence and commitment to meet EC standards.

Incorporated Professional Review (IE2)
This document explains the standard professional review which is open to engineers with older Higher Nationals as well as those meet the newer degree entry requirements.
Becoming IEng: Incorporated Standards (IE3)
This document sets out the EC statements of competence and gives additional guidance and examples. You will need this for all routes.
Other Routes to IEng (IE4)
This doucment explains the other options for recent HND/D qualified engineers and for others with related qualifications or just with experience. These options include the Further Learning and Technical Report routes.
Further Learning (F/IEng)
Explains how to use work based learning to top up an HND or science (cognate) degree to follow the standard Review.
If you have a non-engineering degree or other qualifications, email or telephone IHIE first. You will probably need to supply the following information in order for the Institute to make an individual career assessment.
- A CV which explains current responsibilities
- Copy of your academic certificates
- List of units/modules studied
- Brief details of any final year degree project or dissertation.
