Frequently asked questions
Membership queries
FAQ: Who can sign my application form?
A corporate member of ICE or IHT who knows your work can sign, if you cannot find a local IHIE member.
FAQ: What's the next submission deadline?
Click here for this year's review submission dates.
FAQ: How do I login to the 'Member's Area'?
You don't need a 'login'. A few interactive sections don't yet work but you can view most of the information or contact us.
FAQ: How do I upgrade my membership?
Fill in the Transfer and Subscription Payment Forms. You can upgrade to Member and Fellow on the basis of your experience - no Review is necessary.
FAQ: I have started on the two-part Review, can I continue?
Yes you can continue. You'll need to submit your Review Report etc before 31 December 2009 or, if you wish, you can switch to the streamlined 2006 review - it's up to you.
FAQ: I passed my IPD a couple of years ago; do I have a time limit on my review report?
Yes. You must submit your Review Report etc within 3 years of notification of passing your IPD.
FAQ: Is my Geography degree accepted for IEng?
It depends. Send us copies of your certificate and list of units and all the syllabus details you have. The IHIE Academic Standards Panel decides if the degree contains enough science and technology to be deemed 'cognate'.
If yes, you can top up with further learning and follow the standard review route.
If no, we normally suggest you gain a relevant MSc or an HNC Civils plus 30 degree credits at QCA level H to follow the standard Review route.
In both cases you can follow the Technical Report Route. BA graduates will need a significant or complex engineering scheme to analyse.
FAQ: Who can help me find a Mentor?
It really is best to identify an engineer at your workplace (perhaps your line manager or an EC-registered engineer colleague) willing to support you. If that's not possible email us. We can provide a back-up to assist you or your mentor.
FAQ: I am an IHIE Mentor. When can I become a reviewer?
We like to use keen Mentors on local Technician reviews and as helpers at Preparing for Professional Review courses. You can apply to become a reviewer now if you hold a responsible posst. Once accepted you will be invited to observe a couple of reviews, attend a 'Preparing for Professional Review' course and receive a Briefing CD.
FAQ: How can I top up my HND?
The benchmark academic level for Incorporated Engineer is a batchelor degree in engineering or technology. To gain the equivalent you can:
- transfer to a BSc engineering or technology course final year
- take a relevant MSc or Postgraduate Diploma
- hold the Nottingham Trent University Professional Certificate available by semi-distance learning (entry now closed)
- pass 2 papers from the Engineering Council Diploma exam run by City & Guilds.

FAQ: Is an NVQ4 recognised for IEng?
To follow the standard Incorporated Professional Review you need an accepted academic engineering qualification as well as an NVQ4.
If you have both, you can recycle aspects of your NVQ instead of the normal Project Report - see Document IE3
If you 'only' have the NVQ4, you must follow the Technical Report Route - see Document IE4
FAQ: What counts as health and safety "CPD Days"?
Get more advice in the PR Guidance Note.
FAQ: Can I 'transfer' from IEng to CEng?
There's no direct bridge. You need to gain Further Learning or follow the Technical Report Route if you don't meet the full academic entry requirements. Start by asking IHIE for a career assessment.
