Chartered Engineer

Chartered Engineers provide technical and professional leadership delivering complex or innovative schemes.

To become a Chartered Engineer through IHIE please download the documents below. Go to Forms and Guidance for the application and other forms you'll need and for our helpful advice leaflets. The Rough Guides are a helpful starting point.

IHIE Routes to Registration (E1)

Check you have the right qualifications and experience for CEng.

Becoming CEng: Professional Review (CE2)

This document explains the standard Review route which you can access if you have either the benchmark academic qualifications or if you have a BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) or are a senior IEng and can prove equivalence through Further Learning (see below).

Becoming CEng: Chartered Standards (CE3)

This document sets out the EC statements of competence and gives additional guidance and examples. You will need this for all routes.

Other Routes to CEng (CE4)

Explains the non standard routes to IEng, including the Technical Report Route and how to get advice and confirmation of your progression route.

Further Learning (F/CEng)

Explains how to use work based learning to top up a BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in engineering or science or an IEng with considerable higher level engineering (not management) experience to follow the standard Review.

If you believe you need Further Learning or the Technical Report Route, telephone or email IHIE first. You will probably need to supply the following information in order for the Institute to make an individual career assessment:

  • A CV which explains current responsibilities
  • Copy of your academic certificates
  • List of units/modules studied
  • Brief details of any final year degree project or dissertation.
