Understand how to apply the techniques that create memorable public spaces. The course is open to all. No specific technical qualifications necessary to join. Successful participants will be eligible to join the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers as Members.

Course Overview & Aims

A comprehensive residential and distance learning based course, comprising two residential sessions each of three days. The emphasis is on influencing the design, delivery and management of the total public realm. This means the co-ordination of basic traffic engineering with urban design and landscape principles.

On-site studies into the integration of urban design and traffic issues, using sites immediately reached from the course venue.

Opportunities to meet leading national practitioners as well as people from different disciplines with similar interests.

How to use basic knowledge of all the disciplines involved in order to form balanced judgements on the design delivery and maintenance of high quality public realm:

  • What makes a memorable public realm
  • How quality of space is perceived and measured
  • What agencies are involved and how they operate
  • How different sorts of people use the public realm
  • How urban design context is assessed
  • Principles of movement
  • Principles of traffic management
  • Risk, liability and the avoidance of accidents
  • The difference between regulations and guidance on signs and lines
  • The design of quality pedestrian crossings
  • The design of homezones
  • Concepts of small scale landscape design in public spaces
  • Case studies using the techniques of design
  • Working with the public through effective involvement
  • Efficient delivery and maintenance of quality schemes

Flexible tailored learning

The course has forged close links with experts practising in the varied disciplines. Students will benefit from the mentoring programme.

Each participant will be assigned an experienced, nationally known practitioner to act as mentor to give advice on the chosen case study.

Case studies of existing sites are used throughout the course and students are encouraged to use their own projects as case studies.

Students will be given additional individual help where required and generate links with others in the industry.
